Zombie Island is a video game where a hero fights artificially intelligent (AI) zombies to save the world from an apocalypse.
Zombie Island takes place at a secretive research lab off the coast of Japan. Scientists thought they were close to curing aging and extending the human lifespan infinitely in the lab. However, little did they know that their ‘cure’ would eventually turn patients into brain-eating zombies.
One day Hiro, a scientist, and ex-elite special forces soldier, returns to work after a vacation. Hiro always had a bad feeling about the ‘cure,’ so he had created an antibody for it. Hiro needs to get to his lab, collect the ingredients to make the antibody, and escape without getting bitten by a zombie. The zombies will eventually get to the mainland and start a zombie apocalypse if he doesn’t.
The zombies use both classical and modern AI. The machine learning agents started as ragdolls, then learned to stand and chase the player through reinforcement learning (RL).
Zombie Island was voted to receive the Student’s Choice Award in the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Fall 2021 Showcase.
